Joyce French is a native Kansan, with 50 years’ experience in different business in the Emporia Kansas area. Her family had long years in banking and the retail wholesale petroleum industry. After graduation from Stephens College in Columbia Missouri she came back to Emporia to join the family business, S&S Oil & Propane Co., Inc. Joyce and her brother Jim Shepherd took over operation and ownership and the company and expanded it from the early service stations and farm deliveries to 9 convenience stores and truck stops, with propane deliveries in the 24-county area, and started a fuel trucking company. Recently they sold the petroleum side of the company, plus the common carrier trucking company and are now going forward with development of property investments.
Joyce has always appreciated the knowledge and importance of working together with other business persons. She is a past president of the Kansas Propane Association, former board member of the Propane Education and safety council, PERC, and is a former director of the board of directors of the Petroleum and Convince store association, PMCA now the Fuel True Independent Energy and Convenience, a Kansas Trade Association. She is a member of the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, Emporia Main Street, ESU School of Business, Deans Advisory Council, the ESU Foundation Board, and a former member of the ESU Public Engagement & Service Strategic Planning Committee. In addition to being Vice President of 2S Inc. she is Treasurer of League of Women Voters, Emporia, a member of Emporia Downtown Redevelopment Group, LLC, and Emporia Downtown LLC. Joyce, has son Garland French and grandson Liam.
