The WSU Leading Economic Indicators Index can be used as a short-term predictor of the strength in the Wichita economy. After a four-month decline, the Index’s downward trend was broken by a 0.5 percent increase from June to July. Seven of the nine Index indicators showed improvement in July. The largest percentage increases occurred in the real value of Wichita’s nonresidential building permits and the real value of new orders for aircraft and aircraft parts, nationally. The two indicators that declined from June to July were the real value of Wichita’s residential building permits and the number of hours worked in manufacturing in the Wichita area. It will be necessary to track the movement of the Index over the next couple of months to see if a solid upward trend actually develops.
